Microinterview: Natasha L. Heller

Natasha L. Heller’s 78 word microfiction, “These Sandwiches”, will appear in the third issue of The Centifictionist (Vol. 2, Issue 1, Spring/Summer 2021). Natasha graciously answered a few brief questions for us. Read the interview below.

Natasha L. Heller

1. What inspired the story “These Sandwiches”?

“These Sandwiches” was inspired by the true-life story of Dr. Mengele twin, Eva Mozes Kor. I wanted to pay homage to her (and others like her). Her relatively recent death in Poland, during her annual CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center tour, made me feel the need to honor her (although only in memory) even more.

2. What inspires you and your writing?

My children, and the crazy plot-twists that are my daily life.

3. What keeps you going when experiencing times of misery and despair?

One book that reminds me that there is always hope is Survivors: True Stories of Children in the Holocaust.

4. What advice do you have for microfiction writers?

Find a catalyst for your microfiction; the story that unavoidably needs telling, the one that keeps you up at night.

5. Is there anything else that you would like people to know about you and/or your writing?

I have been published in GreenPrints, Blue Earth Review, and Relief: A Christian Literary Expression, amongst others.

Natasha L. Heller: I have had poems published in the Blue Earth Review, Critique, and Relief: A Quarterly Christian Expression, as well as creative non-fiction published in the periodical GreenPrints. I have fiction forthcoming.
